Newly Registered Nurse Preceptorship Program – NEURO-DISABILITY

We are recruiting to all wards across all RHN service areas, and specifically recruiting for 1 Newly Registered Nurse per ward. Please submit your application we are excited to meet you!

Job Title: Band 5 Registered Nurse

Department: All services recruiting

  • Neuro-Behavioural Service 
  • Brain Injury Service 
  • Ventilator and Young Adults Services
  • Nursing Home / Continued Care 

Responsible to: Ward Manager and Matrons.

Salary range: £30,416 - £39,512 per annum (dependent on experience) Incremental reviews take place on an annual basis.          

Hours of work: 150 hours over a 4 week period (approximately 37.5 hours per week). A long shift is 12 hours. You also have the opportunity for enhanced payments for additional hours worked, and to join our ‘Flexible Workforce’ (Putney Bank).

Shift patterns: Able to work Day / Night / Weekend rotation is a requirement for this role.

Summary Royal Hospital of Neuro-disability 

The RHN is an independent hospital and medical charity. We care for people who have brain injuries and require assessment and intensive rehabilitation for conditions such as Huntington’s disease and prolonged disorders of consciousness. Our specialist services include a ventilator unit and a neuro-behavioural unit.

We help those with the most complex of health needs and disabilities including degenerative or progressive conditions as well as providing palliative care. The patients we support usually have complex physical challenges alongside their neuro-disability. 

Our vision for the future is that we will be the national centre of excellence for neuro-disability. Our mission is to provide outstanding care and empowering individuals with neuro-disability, enabling them to live their lives to their fullest potential. We are seeking Registered Nurses to join all service areas at the RHN. Your key responsibility is to deliver a high standard of professional clinical care to patients and residents of the hospital. Services provided by RHN are divided into; 

  • Neuro-Behavioural Service 
  • Brain Injury Service 
  • Ventilator and Young Adults Services 
  • Nursing Home / Continued Care 

Preceptorship Program

Our preceptorship programme is designed for nurses graduating from university and becoming newly registered nurses. It will support you as you develop your confidence as an autonomous Nursing professional, refining your skills, values and behaviours as you work with highly experienced professionals within the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) workforce.

Our preceptorship is delivered through classroom based face-to-face sessions, combined with practical experience and assessment in clinical areas and some eLearning modules. You will have paid protected and supernumerary time to go through the programme successfully. Duration of the programme is six to nine months.

Newly Registered Nurses’ knowledge, skills and experience will be considered as part of which service area to allocate you to. You may have a preference for a particular service area which can be discussed at interview. One of the benefits of developing your career at the RHN is that you will have opportunities to rotate across different service areas and learn a range of skills as a Nurse.

Main Objectives of the role

  • To deliver a high standard of care to the patient and residents of the hospital.
  • To actively contribute to creating a culture where quality is at the centre of everything we do and is delivered on all occasions to the highest level, in accordance with the appropriate CQC regulations and professional standards including the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code.
  • To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:
  • Protecting and supporting the health of individual patients and residents
  • Assessment of care and health and social care needs
  • Development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for individual patients and residents
  • Within a model of clinical supervision, to gain experience and skills in, Clinical practice, Facilitation and teaching, Management and leadership.
  • To maintain effective communication with patients, residents, families/carers and staff.
  • To take charge of the ward/department in the absence of senior nursing staff when agreed competencies to do so have been fully attained.

Experience and Qualifications Required:

  • Relevant Nursing degree
  • NMC Registered with an active PIN
  • Evidence of high level of nursing evidence based practice to support patient care delivery

Desirable experience:

  • Nursing placement experience/exposure to neuro-disability, neurology wards or patients with brain injuries. 
  • Experience in rehabilitation of people who present with challenging behaviours, such as verbal and physical aggression, withdrawn behaviour, dis-inhibition and impulsivity.
  • Previous experience or related training or qualification in management of challenging behaviours, including but not limited to de-escalation, positive reinforcement and re-direction.
  • Previous experience or related training in Positive Behaviour Support and its guiding principles.
  • Previous experience or related training in Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) and Breakaway techniques
  • Leadership or management experience
