Incremental reviews take place on an annual basis

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week

Summary of position and the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

We are seeking a Band 6 Clinical Pharmacist to join our Pharmacy team in the RHN. The Pharmacy Department provides services with the aim of ensuring the safe, evidence based and cost effective use of medicines within RHN. Main services provided include; medicines supply, prescription review, ward top-up, ward audit, development of local medicines guidelines and policies, contract negotiations, and expert medicines advice.

The RHN is an independent hospital and medical charity. We care for people who have brain injuries and require assessment and intensive rehabilitation for conditions such as Huntington’s disease and prolonged disorders of consciousness. Our specialist services include a ventilator unit and a neuro-behavioural unit.

We help those with the most complex of health needs and disabilities including degenerative or progressive conditions as well as providing palliative care. The patients we support usually have complex physical challenges alongside their neuro-disability.

Main Objectives of the role

  1. Provide expert advice to multidisciplinary colleagues on matters relating to safe, economic and effective drug use, including implementation of local and national medicines related policies.
  2. Support and promote safe medicines management practices in all hospital areas.
  3. Ensure that hospital resources are used efficiently and with minimum wastage.
  4. Contribute to clinical governance within the department and hospital.
  5. Strive to improve efficiency in all areas of your work.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Deliver clinical pharmacy services such as; prescription review, patient counselling, adverse drug reaction reporting, therapeutic drug monitoring, individualisation of patient drug therapy.
  2. Undertake medicines reconciliation for all new patients, ensuring discrepancies are resolved, documented, and communicated.
  3. Undertake clinical and technical duties in the dispensary ensuring that activities are carried out safely, effectively and efficiently.
  4. Identify changes in prescribing patterns that may affect the drugs budget and support the provision of evaluated pharmaceutical and financial information.
  5. Participate in audits, and service evaluations.
  6. Participate in the development of local policies, guidelines and procedures.
  7. Attend and contribute to meetings which require Pharmacy representation.
  8. Deputise for senior colleagues when necessary.
  9. Delegate appropriately to junior pharmacy staff, and evaluate their performance.
  10. Be willing and able to adapt to new and changing requirements of the department.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential

  • Current registration with GPhC & Master’s Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent.
  • Awareness of, and training in Information Governance/GDPR/Confidentiality/Data Protection.

Experience & skills

Essential

  • Hospital pharmacy experience.
  • IT skills – able to use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and able to learn new systems e.g. EPR, PMR.
  • Honesty and integrity.
  • Reliable work record.
  • Organised and competent at planning ahead to manage workloads.
  • Team player, able to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Proactive and willing to take on new tasks and challenges.
