Consultant in Neuro-rehabilitation – Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

Responsible to: Medical Director

Salary range: £91,667-121,106 per annum (dependent on experience)
Incremental reviews take place on an annual basis

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week (Full time) or Part-time

Location: Putney, Southwest London

The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability is a leading national centre of excellence. We provide rehabilitation, care and support for people with severe and complex neurological disabilities.

Services

We offer a wide range of specialist services provided by multi-professional teams. These services include:

  • Brain Injury Services including Level 1 and level 2 neuro-rehabilitation
  • Services for people with prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDOC)
  • Ventilator support for people with neuro-respiratory impairments
  • Level 2 neuro-behavioural services
  • Services for younger adults
  • Specialist Nursing Home services
  • Specialist equipment support services

The hospital has approximately 240 beds, 48 of which are dedicated to neuro-rehabilitation services.

Multi-professional teams

Our services are led by dedicated multi-professional teams including: nurses, physiotherapist, occupational therapists, dieticians, speech and language therapists, neuro-psychologists and social workers. Our teams are supported by additional services included leisure and family support, music therapy and electronic assistive technology. Rehabilitation is goal orientated and incorporates a wide range of outcome measures.

Research, innovation and education

We have a well-established interest in research and innovation and are committed to understanding more about neuro-disability and discovering new treatments, support and care. Our research programme is supported by a dedicated research unit. The unit oversees the development and implementation of our research strategy and supports research projects across the range of our services and multiprofessional teams. Electronic assistive technology is provided by our Compass service.

We provide a highly regarded educational service supporting a programme of conferences and other educational events focused on neuro-disability.

Our charitable status means that we are able to provide numerous additional services for our patients and support our research, innovation and educational programmes.

Commissioners and partners

Our patients are primarily NHS funded and we work in close partnership with our commissioners and local NHS Trusts.

Our research team has established relationships with academic units. We are aiming to further strengthen such partnerships with units with an interest in neuro-science.

Medical team

Hospital services including: the neuro-rehabilitation service, the ventilation unit, PDOC services, and neuro-behavioural services are Consultant led. The present Consultant establishment includes 6 full-time and part-time posts, including this post. The Consultant team is supported by a team of 6 full-time clinical Fellows providing day to day care.

Specialist nursing home services, services for younger adults and some longer stay patients in the Neuro-behavioural unit are GP led and overseen by a local primary care practice.

Out of hours care across all services is provided by a Clinical Fellow as first on call supported by a Consultant.

This post

As part of our commitment to understanding more about neuro-disability this is a new post with a dedicated focus on research.

We are looking for a Consultant who shares our vision and ambitions of excellence in service provision and leadership in research.   

You will provide care for patients within the Hospital’s Brain Injury Services for three days a week and for two days a week undertake research in the field of neuro-disability related to the work of the hospital. We are aiming to increase our partnerships with academic units with an interest in neuro-science and will expect you to champion this.    

The role includes participation in an on call rota which is envisaged as a 1 in 4.

Main objectives and key responsibilities

General

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the RHN’s mission, vision and strategy and working collaboratively with others contribute to their achievement
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the RHN’s values and provide leadership in relation to these

Clinical Service

  • Consistently deliver treatments, care and support to a high standard based on the most up to date research
  • Always focus on the desires and priorities of our patients and those close to them
  • Provide clinical care for designated patients within the Hospital’s Brain Injury Service with a focus on level 1 neuro-rehabilitation.
  • Provide out of hours on call support
  • Lead multi-professional team case conferences
  • Support pre admission assessment
  • Provide appropriate information to patients and those close to them and encourage their participate in decisions about their medical care
  • Maintain high standards of clinical records
  • Provide clinical reports as required

Research

  • Develop a research portfolio related to the work of the hospital and agreed with the Medical Director and Associate Director of Research
  • Champion the role of neuro-disability research and research methodologies within the hospital and with key stakeholders
  • Participate in the development of partnership/s with appropriate academic units

Other

  • Participate in clinical governance activities including clinical audit and the development of policies and guidelines with a focus on continuous improvement of our services
  • Participate in service development and service innovation projects
  • Participate in training and educational activities
  • Keep up to date with your practice and participate in medical appraisal and revalidation processes
  • Participate in the RHN individual performance review system
  • Work in line with RHN policies and guidelines
  • Provide cover for other medical staff during periods of leave or illness.  

Personal specification

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • A CCST in Rehabilitation Medicine or equivalent or a CCST in Neurology, Geriatric Medicine or Stroke Medicine or equivalent with experience in neuro-rehabilitation or be within 6 months or achieving these CCSTs
  • A track record in research or innovation and a curiosity to find out more
  • Values which embrace diversity, team working, holistic care and a willingness to learn
  • Experience and understanding of clinical governance and clinical audit
  • Leadership qualities
  • Commitment to the hospitals mission, vision, strategy and values

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching and training
  • Experience of service development relevant to our services
