Job Title: Ward Manager (Band 7)

Department: Drapers Ward, Brain Injury Service (BIS)

Responsible to: Matron for BIS

Salary range: £45,745- £58,038 per annum (Band 7) - Incremental reviews take place on an annual basis

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours of work: 150 hours over a 4 week period (approximately 37.5 hours per week). A long shift is 12 hours and you will be required to work 1 clinical LD shift per week. You also have the opportunity for enhanced payments for additional hours worked, and to join our ‘Flexible Workforce’ (Putney Bank).

Summary Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

We are seeking a highly skilled, motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the leadership team at the RHN as The Ward Manager of Drapers Ward in our Brain Injury Service (BIS). This role is a high profile, accessible and responsive leader with professional, clinical and managerial responsibility for our Brain Injury Service ward which provides level 1 neuro-rehabilitation to a complex group of patients.

The post holder will provide strong leadership for an interdisciplinary team and will act as a role model within the service and organisation to foster a culture of professional development, team support and quality standards of care.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ward and co-ordination of the patient’s care to ensure a high standard of evidence-based nursing care is consistently delivered to patients. They will ensure that a safe, cost effective service is provided and will act as a role model and patient advocate, ensuring a positive patient experience for all.

Main Objectives of the role

  1. To deliver a high standard of care to the patient and residents of the hospital.
  2. To provide leadership and direction to the nursing workforce in your ward.
  3. To participate in complaints management within the framework of the hospital complaints policy; this will include undertaking investigations, incident reporting and investigating and root cause analyses including reviewing trends and reporting and monitoring
  4. To actively contribute to creating a culture where quality is at the centre of everything we do and is delivered on all occasions to the highest level, in accordance with the appropriate CQC regulations and professional standards including the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code.

 

Key Responsibilities

  1. To provide effective line management for ward staff ensuring adequate resources to ensure safe practice within their agreed establishment and budgets.
  2. To provide consistent, clear, clinical and professional leadership and act as a mentor for all staff demonstrating professional awareness and accountability in care.
  3. Ensure strong levels of nursing staff engagement, providing visible leadership and direction.
  4. Assist the Lead Nurse by identifying workforce requirements and participate in the recruitment and selection process in accordance with Hospital policies and procedures.
  5. Work closely with other members of the nursing team to deliver the successful implementation of key initiatives as appropriate, managing the impact of change within the team.
  6. Monitor and attain financial performance within the ward budget.
  7. Ensure that conflicts, disagreements and misunderstandings are handled promptly and effectively.
  8. Ensure that learning from incidents and complaints takes place across the ward and organisation to prevent re-occurrences

 

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • First level Registered Nurse with current registration on the NMC register.
  • First degree in relevant subject or post-registration qualification in Specialist Practice that is relative to the role or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Teaching/Mentor qualification or the commitment to undertake and successfully complete within 12 months of appointment.
  • Knowledge of NMC Codes and guidelines and their implications for practice.
  • Knowledge of the Health & Social Care Act 2008 and Care Quality Commission Requirements.
  • Knowledge of Human Resources policies, processes and tools including interviewing, performance coaching and conducting performance reviews.
  • Good financial awareness and control.

Desirable

  • Relevant management/leadership qualification or evidenced experience.
  • Evidence of study at MSc level within either leadership or specialist area of nursing practice.

 

Experience and skills

Essential

  • Appropriate experience in a Sister/Charge Nurse role.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Experienced in resource management
  • Experience of delivering, monitoring and evaluating training programmes with clinical staff.
  • Experience of successfully managing the implementation of change.
  • Experience in clinical audits.
  • Experience in the development of policies and protocols to support best practice.
  • Experience in incident and risk management
  • Experience in complaints management

Desirable

  • Experience in research and development
  • Experience working in Brain injury rehab
  • Skills in tracheostomy care
