Summary of position and the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability
The RHN is a leading national centre of excellence, providing adult person-centred services that span the entire care pathway from post-acute rehabilitation services to end of life care, for people with complex Neuro-disability and their families, underpinned by a strong research and education programme.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Music Therapy Assistant to join our Music Therapy Department. The music therapy team provide group and individual sessions to patients across the hospital. Many wards are referral only and music therapists attend case reviews as appropriate. We run joint sessions with other disciplines and have targeted goals for each patient.
There is opportunity for joint working with other professions. There will also be supervision opportunities and administrative duties within the role for the Music Therapy Department. The candidate must have availability to work on Wednesdays, this is essential. The Department promotes a culture of continuing professional development through clinical supervision provided by the professional lead and training specified to the team’s needs.
Main Objectives of the role –
- Demonstrate an awareness of RHN’s objectives and contribute to achieving them appropriately.
- Strive to improve efficiency in all areas of your work.
- Assist in the organisation and clinical service delivery of the Music Therapy Service under the direct supervision of Music Therapists employed within the Music Therapy Service.
- Carry out a variety of administrative tasks (departmental and clinical) under the guidance and supervision of the Professional lead for Music Therapy or any other Music Therapist identified by the Professional lead for Music Therapy.
- Assist in specified clinical activities under the close supervision of a qualified Music Therapist and assist with the Music Therapy Service’s clinical input to the Huntington’s disease service, rehabilitation wards and specialist nursing home.
Key Responsibilities
- To undertake administrative responsibilities appropriate to the departmental needs as directed by the Professional lead for Music Therapy or another nominated by her/him.
- To assist with resourcing, ordering, managing and replacing music therapy equipment in liaison with the Professional lead for music therapy and any music therapist nominated by her/him. This will include promoting hygiene and infection control through washing and cleaning of equipment.
- To assist music therapy staff in the delivery of clinical treatment across specialist services, the brain injury service and specialist nursing home .This may include running groups, assisting in groups, supervising and working with volunteers, creative arts workshops or making behavioural observations within sessions.
- To assist with aspects of clinical activity under supervision of qualified staff, including thorough verbal feedback to music therapy staff or others nominated by them on patient responses to ensure effective and efficient review of the programme and intervention.
- To partake in regular supervision with a Music Therapy supervisor identified by the Professional lead for Music Therapy.
- To attend the weekly Music Therapy service meeting and contribute to these meetings by taking the minutes, completing actions, contributing to administrative tasks emerging within or outside of the meeting.
- To retrieve and enter data into music therapy databases or any other unit identified by the Professional lead for Music Therapy (or another nominated by him/her) so that music therapy activity across the hospital is logged and monitored.
- To undertake risk assessments of the music therapy treatment room/old office and parts of the therapy hub.
- To assist with use of technological equipment.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- To be able to sing and accompany on piano or guitar
- To be proficient in IT systems
Desirable
- To have some experience in use of music technology
- To have some team working experience
- To have some experience of working with special needs/disability
- To have experience in administration
- To be proficient in recording/auditing techniques
