Salary range: Band 7 £43,567 - £55,274  (dependent on experience)
Incremental reviews take place on an annual basis

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week

Summary of the position and what we are looking for

We are seeking an enthusiastic, driven, and dynamic Trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join our Long Term Ventilation Unit at the RHN. The role will involve working across our two term ventilation units. This role provides the opportunity to be an integral part of a service that provides the largest long-term ventilation service and deliver innovative and transformational care that best serves our patient community. Masters level training at an affiliated University will be provided and the post holder will be expected to complete a Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice.

Working as part of multidisciplinary team, Advanced Nurse Practitioners make an important contribution to Long Term Ventilation Service. Under the supervision of the senior medical team the trainee role encompasses the undertaking assessment of long-term patients with home mechanical ventilation using a range of different assessment and management methods, which may include physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medicines and advanced health needs assessment. The trainee will be supported throughout their learning journey by the consultant in Long Term Ventilation whilst also utilising all learning opportunity from every member of the medical and wider Multidisciplinary Team.

The post holder will work as a member of Long Term Ventilation Service in various ways. In addition, the post holder will have responsibility in contributing to the training and supervision of the Long Term Ventilation Service and junior medical staff (non-procedural supervision)

The service is led by the Consultant and Lead Nurse/ Matron, and the trainee ANP /ANP will work within their guidance and supervision.

Main Objectives of the role

The Trainee ANP will be expected to develop themselves around the four pillars of advanced practice: Clinical practice, Leadership, Education of self and others, and Research & Development. The post holder is an experienced healthcare professional qualified to degree level, individual training needs will be met by undertaking MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and clinical portfolio in order to achieve the level of competence / capability required by the post as an advanced Nurse practitioner (Band 8a). They will be supported through indirect supervisions and responsible for assessing, diagnosing, interpreting investigations and treating patients within a developing scope of practice.

  1. Work to a high level of personal and professional’s autonomy, using specialist knowledge and skills to deliver independent assessment, clinical examination, diagnosis, clinical decision making and planning of care and management, health promotion and safe admission and discharge of patients. This may include;
  • On call / out of hours and in hours responsibilities as part of agreed job plan
  • Act as an independent non-medical prescriber where applicable to role / professions
  1. Work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, contribute to decision making and provide best clinical care , emotional and psychological support and education to patients and their carers
  2. Facilitate evidence based practice and promote and undertake research and clinical audit within the service and across the organisation. Design and provide clinical/practical and theory-based education and training
  3. Work with innovation and flexibility to adapt to a fast-changing specialty, and play an integral role in the operational and strategic development of the service.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • NMC Registered healthcare professional
  •  Eligible for entry onto MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme
    • Health related first degree
    • English and Maths at GCSE grade C/4 or above, or min Level 2 functional skills or equivalent

Desirable

  • Independent prescriber qualification
  • Leadership qualification
  • Teaching qualification

Experience and skills

Essential

  • Significant and evidenced post registration experience (normally 5-years)
  • Evidenced ‘speciality’ experience to the level of specialist (normally 2-years, applicable to role)
  • Experience and evidence in developing practice / services
  • Experience in advanced history taking, patient examination and clinical reasoning skills, evidence related to role
  • Experience and evidence of supporting learning in others
  • Experience and evidence of participation in audit / research

Desirable

  • Experience of disseminating work through presentation / publication
