Salary range: Band 5 - Dependent on experience. Incremental reviews take place on an annual basis.

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week

Location: Putney, Southwest London

Summary of position and the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability is a non-profit medical charity, and a hospital and care home, based in Putney, South West London. We provide both short and long-term specialist services (assessment, rehabilitation, and disability management) for adults with profound or complex disabilities resulting from damage to the brain or nervous system. Through these services, which are enhanced by a funded research programme, we seek to enable people with profound Neuro-disability to enjoy an optimal quality of life.

We are looking for a Basic Grade (band 5) Occupational Therapist to join our team at The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability. This role involves working across a range of specialist units in the Brain Injury Service. You will be required to prepare and administer therapeutic Occupational Therapy programmes as part of an interdisciplinary team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is interested in a career to gain some clinical experience in adult neuro-rehabilitation and palliative care.

Main Objectives of the role

  1. To put in place effective interventions arising from assessment.
  2. To contribute to the patient’s care plan.
  3. To participate in MDT working (meetings, reviews, discharge planning and reports) as required.
  4. To provide a flexible occupational therapy service for both individual patients and groups within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  5. To be responsible for organising and running therapeutic individual sessions and groups with a designated caseload of patients using specific technical knowledge/skill, modifying and adapting therapeutic programmes, according to patient need and agreed aims, with support and liaison from line manager.
  6. To communicate complex information related to treatment programmes.
  7. To assist in organising and running departmental training sessions.
  8. To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice with peers and supervisors, to maintain own knowledge base and to identify own areas for development.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • English GCSE or equivalent, grade 7 and above from English proficiency testing.
  • Diploma/degree/master’s degree in Occupational Therapy recognised by RCOT & HCPC.
  • State Registered OT with HCPC in UK.
  • Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
  • Current Professional Portfolio demonstrating continued professional development through clinical reflection and PDP/Appraisal.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the OT process from referral to discharge.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the theoretical basis of the profession and evidence based practice.

Desirable

  • Attended any relevant training courses for adults with disability
  • Member of Royal College of Occupational Therapists/special interest group.

Experience and skills

Essential

  • Ability to prescribe and grade a detailed treatment plan.
  • Enthusiastic for work with neuro-disability and demonstrate understanding of brain injury and neuro-rehabilitation.
  • Some experience (as Basic Grade or student) in some area related to the field of neurology.
  • Experience of managing a caseload, experience of physical disability, experience of assessment and/or OT treatment.
  • Some experience of working with adults with disability (physical or mental health).
  • Experience of working with adults with a disability either in health, social or educational setting.
  • Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to cope effectively in difficult situations and demonstrate ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to organise work and manage time effectively and independently.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with patient, multi-disciplinary team and with other professionals.
  • Evidence of use of time management skills.
  • Demonstrates competent ability to prioritise clinical tasks into essential and desirable to plan achievable actions and timetables.

Desirable

  • Minimum of 1 year practising as a qualified OT.
